Unimaginable for some, while others of us at Outpost have had to face this question from time-to-time during our co-op’s 40 years of business. The recession has taken its toll on a number of local businesses, and that has created negative consequences for our local print media.
Fortunately, at this juncture, the co-op is doing well. You’ll see in our upcoming annual report that we managed to turn our business around in the midst of the recession. Unfortunately, our own print media, this Exchange Magazine, is suffering a terrible loss of advertising revenue. Advertising revenue for the Exchange is down 29% in the quarter that just closed on December 26, 2009.
We’ve now reached that juncture where a decision must be made. Should we continue to print a monthly magazine? If we do continue some form of news and information, at what cost? And while advertising revenue doesn’t drive that decision, it does support that decision.
Malcolm, our magazine Editor, has suggested in the last two issues of the Exchange that you can lend your support by recommending advertisers, paying for an annual subscription of the magazine, or thanking advertisers for supporting us. This has made a small positive difference in revenue, so please don’t stop. It unfortunately, is not enough.
We need to hear from you, Outpost’s owners and Exchange readers. Since Outpost’s purpose is to create a healthy, diverse and sustainable community, how do you feel the Exchange magazine contributes to that mission? Is there information you wish we would distribute more frequently, or less frequently? If we only had an online presence, would you have access to us? How important is it to receive notice of co-op events, product specials, new products, local vendor profiles and recipes in a print format?
Please tell us NOW.
Thank you!
Pam Mehnert

General Questions
exchange@outpostnaturalfoods.coop
calendar@outpostnaturalfoods.coop
We have elected to streamline the calendar to include only those submissions that can be considered events. Events are defined as planned public or social occasions scheduled for a specific date or series of dates, and typically include the following: art exhibits, live performances and lectures. Preference will be given to non-profit organizations, events that are free of charge, and those events which specifically pertain to health, wellness and the environment.
Rest assured, we have no intention of excluding those individuals or groups who submit material to the Exchange. We hope to accommodate many of these entries in regular directories and guides in special sections of the regular issues. Contact the editor, Malcolm Woods at malcolm@outpostnaturalfoods.coop regarding these.
Please note the new address! calendar@outpostnaturalfoods.coop. Only photo attachments will be opened, so please do not attach any document files. All text must be in the body of the e-mail.
